Welcome to Elderberry
Dear Elderberry Champion Families,
to the 2016-2017 school year! The staff and I are excited to welcome everyone
back to school. Our goal is to provide a
rigorous, engaging academic experience for all students that is supported by a
partnership between the Elderberry staff, families and the community. We will
work to provide the foundation necessary for students to be college and career
Our motto is: Be a Champion! We work on ways to be a
champion for ourselves and the people around us. Students work hard and strive
for academic excellence. Students are ultimately preparing for high school,
college and beyond. They are learning to lead healthy lifestyles through
morning exercises, walking club, participation in school and district sports,
and learning about healthy eating through Harvest of the Month.
Heading back to school is an exciting time for our
staff, parents and especially students. The beginning of the year is filled
with many experiences. It is important to let our children know that there is a
partnership between school and home and that we are all working to help them be
successful. Take the time each day to ask your child about their day at school.
Never accept the answer of “fine” or “nothing happened”. Ask what he/she
learned or who they played with. Ask questions that lead to conversations. At
Elderberry, we require students to always speak in complete sentences. This is
a skill that would be great to reinforce at home as well. The beginning of the
year is a great time to get routines in place for getting to school on time and
completing homework each night. Taking the time to establish these in the
beginning will help make the rest of the year run more smoothly. Most
importantly, I ask that if you ever have questions or concerns, please talk to
the classroom teacher or visit the office for assistance.
The first student day
will be Monday, August 8th and will be a full day beginning at 7:45
a.m. until 2:25 p.m. Dismissal for first – sixth grade is 2:25 every day except
Tuesday which is 1:10. Kindergarten and TK will follow their regular schedule
on the first day as well. Kindergarten parents will receive more information in
the mail regarding schedules and teachers. Class lists will be posted Friday,
August 5 after 3:30. Lists will include teacher names and room numbers. Staff
members will also be available on Monday morning to help direct students to
their new classrooms.
Our Back-To-School Night
will be Wednesday, August 10th from 5:00-6:30 p.m. and will
begin in the MPR. You will have the opportunity to visit your child’s classroom,
begin to form a relationship with the classroom teacher, learn about the grade
level expectations for academics and behavior, and involvement opportunities.
Our front office is open beginning
July 25th and can assist with any questions.
Elderberry is an amazing place to
learn and I hope you are as excited as I am
about the year ahead! I look forward to the opportunity to meet you and your
family as we begin the new school year together.
Ms. Alicia Mateus
